Important information

In recent years ‘European Harmonisation’ has been quietly developing.

Jan 1997: introduction of new driver licensing regulations requiring separate testing for entitlement to tow a trailer. Key changes include Photo style Driving Licenses which need to be renewed every 10 years

April 2007; introduction of digital tachographs for all combinations of “tractor & trailer” exceeding 3500kg – also introducing tachographs for 4 x 4’s towing trailers in combination where exceeding 3500kg.

Also cancellation of exemptions for ‘exhibition trailers’ and other special application units previously exempted.

Draconian penalties for non compliance particularly of Operator Licensing rules applying to all 3500kg + combinations of Commercial Vehicles and trailers include the entitlement to impound vehicles, so please ensure that you understand the rules before taking to the road.
